SARATOGA FREE FRIDGE

Love your community. A mutual aid collective.

Take what you need, give what you can.

The Saratoga free Fridge program began in May 2021. We had come to the realization that their were many community members that didn’t not have a place to get essential items like water, food, or hygiene products 24/7. Many individuals rely on programs with strict operational hours, and many have been shamed by society, making it uncomfortable to ask for help.

Our goal is to destigmatize giving and receiving free stuff by giving back the self autonomy that is often taken from marginalized groups and by involving the entire community in the process. Through crowdfunding and working with local farms and businesses we are able to stock the free fridge with an assortment of essential items based on the needs of the community. We have ongoing Poetic Community series, a night to come together to spread the work and build relationships through poetry, music, and mutual aid.

We have worked with C.R.E.A.T.E. Community Studios to have a youth art group to display their artwork and engage in important conversations about food and its role in our lives.

We are currently hosted by the Frederick Allen Lodge who has historically been a mutual aid organization for the black community in Saratoga Springs for more than a century.
